Materials — What They're For
Vinyl Dumbbells

Cast Iron with Chrome Handles
Classic. Lasts forever. 1.25–25 kg plates are added to a bar. Suitable for home with a limited budget.
Rubber Hexagonal (Hex)
Cast iron coated in hard rubber, hexagonal in shape (they don't roll). Standard for gyms and CrossFit. Withstand drops. Series from 2.5 to 50 kg in 2.5 kg increments.
Urethane
Premium class. Polyurethane instead of rubber — doesn't smell, doesn't leave marks on floors, more resistant to UV and impacts. Standard for top commercial gyms. Series 2–50 kg or 2.5–60 kg.
Chrome Dumbbells
Light weights (1–5 kg) for studio classes, Pilates, rehabilitation. Aesthetic, but not for heavy training.
